How to Reinvigorate Your Marketing After the Summer Break

Strategy and planning sign on the beach

There’s something about coming back from the summer break that gives you a fresh perspective.

The pace starts to pick up again, inboxes fill, businesses get back into their routines and suddenly there’s a realisation: there are only a few months left of the year.

Rather than letting the final stretch of the year disappear in a blur of day-to-day activity, now is the perfect time to step back, reset and reinvigorate your marketing.

You don’t need to start again from scratch. You simply need to take a fresh look at what you’re doing, what’s working and where you want to focus between now and the end of the year.

Here are seven things to consider as you get your marketing back into gear.

1. What worked before the summer — and what didn’t?

Before you rush into creating new content, take a moment to look back.

  • Which marketing activity generated enquiries or leads?

  • What content received the most engagement?

  • Which channels actually reached your ideal customers?

  • What took lots of time without delivering much in return?

You don’t need to reinvent your marketing. Your previous activity can give you plenty of clues about where to focus your efforts for the rest of the year.

2. Is your messaging still relevant?

Your business may have changed since the beginning of the year. Perhaps you’ve introduced new services, changed your focus, won new clients or discovered something your customers really value.

So ask yourself:

Does our marketing still reflect where the business is today?

If your messaging feels a little outdated, now is a great time to refresh it so that your website, social media and other marketing all tell a consistent story.

3. Give your content a fresh injection of energy

If your content has started to feel a little repetitive, don’t just keep doing more of the same. Think about new conversations you can start:.

  • Share customer stories.

  • Answer questions.

  • Show the people behind the business.

  • Share your expertise.

  • Talk about lessons you’ve learned this year or what you’re seeing in your industry.

Your audience doesn’t need more noise. They need content that is useful, relevant, relatable and human.

4. Focus on what your customers need now

Your customers’ priorities may have changed over the summer too.

  • What are they thinking about as they head towards the final quarter of the year?

  • What challenges are they facing?

  • What decisions are they making?

  • What could you help them solve before the end of the year?

The strongest marketing connects what you do with what your customers actually need.

5. Make the most of the final months

There’s still plenty of time left in the year but it will go quickly.

Look at your business goals and ask:

  • What do we want to achieve before the end of the year?

  • Which products or services need more visibility?

  • Are there opportunities we haven’t yet promoted?

  • What campaigns, events or activity should we be planning now?

A focused three or four-month marketing plan can make a huge difference to how you finish the year.

6. Stop trying to do everything

Coming back from a break can sometimes make you feel like you need to catch up on everything at once.

You don’t.

Choose the marketing activities that are most likely to make a difference and concentrate your time and energy there.

You don’t need to be everywhere. You need to be visible in the right places, with the right message, consistently.

7. Turn your fresh perspective into action

Perhaps the biggest opportunity after the summer break is the chance to start with a clean slate. You’ve had time away from the business and you may have new ideas, renewed energy and a clearer sense of what you want to achieve.

Don’t let that disappear as you get pulled back into the usual routine.

Use it.

Review. Refocus. Refresh. Then put a plan in place for the months ahead.

Finish the year strong

You don’t need to wait until January to think about your marketing, there’s still time to build momentum, strengthen your visibility, generate new opportunities and finish the year on a high.

The key is to be intentional about where you put your effort rather than simply doing more marketing for the sake of it.
